Hamilton-Wenham Athletics FAQ

What date will athletics begin for the WINTER season?
The start date for practice / tryouts is December 14th.

What HWRHS sports are allowed by the state & MIAA this fall?
Boy's & Girl's Basketball, Gymnastics, Boy's Ice Hockey and Boy's & Girl's Swimming & Diving.  Girl's Hockey at Marblehead will begin on the same day.

Indoor Track Wrestling at Salem have been moved to seasons later in the School Year.  The hope is to have Indoor Track in the Floating Season and Wrestling outdoors in the Spring.

How will User Fees be affected by modified (shortened seasons)?
We are planning to announce User Fees on December 7th.  As always, User Fees will be established based on the best, known information and will account for season adjustments.  They are also based on number of participants that are signed up for that particular sport.  Families of student-athletes will have to finalize their fee prior to their child participating attending their first practice.

Which students will be allowed to participate?
Any student who has signed up through FamilyID meets standard eligibility requirements, has a valid physical and has paid the user fee is eligible to try out.

Who will be able to practice on a daily basis?
All students meeting eligibility requirements may participate in Winter sports.  This includes those that have chosen the full remote option, those with a valid MIAA waiver and families with a district approved home school plan. It also includes HWRHS students playing Girl's Hockey at Marblehead and MERHS Gymnasts participating at HWRHS.

What are the guidelines for student-athletes to “enter the day” (i.e. How do they arrive to participate)?
Students absent from school - virtually or in person - will not participate on that given day.  Any student experiencing symptoms on a given day should stay completely away from team activities that day and immediately notify the school nurse. Checking symptoms is the responsibility of the student's family and the student.  If the student feels unwell in any way, they should immediately seek out the school nurse.  Further, coaches and student-athletes are required to comply with the MA travel order here: https://www.mass.gov/info-deta...

During Periods of Remote Learning:
Student-Athletes will wait in their cars until 10 minutes before practice.  Coaches will direct players on which door to enter the athletic facility and at what time.  Masks will be worn while walking into the pre-designated location.  Students should come dressed for practice as Locker Rooms will be unavailable.  Student-Athletes should have an equipment bag that includes:  Hydration for the day (Team water or drinking ice will not be provided), personal hand sanitizer and extra masks.  Sport specific items would also be in this bag.

During Periods of Hybrid Learning: Student-Athletes whose Cohort is not in school that day will wait in their cars until 10 minutes before practice.

Student-athletes whose cohort is in school that day will drop their equipment bag (see above for what the bag should include) in their locker room in the morning before school.  The Team Room will be locked until the end of the day.  Coaches will open the Team room at the end of the day and allow athletes to changed in a spaced out manner, using a maximum number in the room at a time.  At the end of the day's activities, all individual equipment bags will be brought home and sanitized.

Have any changes been made with physicals?  What if I can’t get an appointment with my child’s primary care doctor?
The MIAA confirmed that physicals are still only valid for 13 months and need to be on file in the nurse’s office. The Mass. Department of Public Health has chosen not to extend this length of time.

CVS Minute Clinic is providing sports/camp physicals if securing an appointment with primary care is difficult.

Please see MIAA Announcement re: new partnership with ConvenientMD. This could also help with securing a physical.

What if my child is absent from school?
Students who are absent from school are ineligible to participate in practice or a game on the day they are absent.  If the absence occurs on a Friday, the student-athlete is ineligible to participate in practice or a game until Monday.

Can locker rooms be used?
While HWRHS is in Full Remote school mode, Locker Rooms and Team Rooms will not be available.  Student-Athletes should come dressed for practice. This will be revisited when school returns to a Hybrid Model.

Student-athletes will take their individual equipment home each day. For those whose cohort is not in session, they will come dressed from home for practice.

Will showers be available?
Showers are not available at HWRHS.

Practices, Games and Out-of-Season Contact

Will practices be different?
Yes.  Your team's coach will set the parameters, approved by the EEA, DESE and MIAA for your particular sport. You can find those guidelines here: http://miaa.net/contentm/easy_pages/view.php?sid=38&page_id=317

Will student-athletes have to wear a mask during practices and games?
Student-athletes in a particular sport will follow guidance from EEA, DESE and MIAA. Your team's coach will set the parameters, approved by the EEA, DESE and MIAA for your particular sport.

Will community water supplies (jugs, bottles, etc.) still be used?
No.  Student-Athletes should bring their own water supply every day.  Ice for the purposes of drinking will not be made available.

Will fans be allowed at games and events?
The Cape Ann League has recommended to all it schools that the first two weeks of athletic contests be played without any fans.  The Athletic Directors and their schools will re-evaluate this position at that time and take the most recent guidelines from Governor Baker into further consideration. The CAL is working on ways to hold Senior Day events and HWRHS is working on ways to film some games that take place in the various contest sites.

We have been hearing a lot regarding out-of-season practice. What does this mean?
The MIAA approved a one-year hiatus from Rule 40, which prohibits coaches from working with players on their team out of season. Neither the CAL nor HWRSD has not approved this change.
